A message for prospective residents…

Dear Colleagues,

Residency training is the final and most important step in launching a challenging and fulfilling career. You’ve worked hard through medical school and you deserve the best opportunities. Your training program should not only give you the tools and skills to become an outstanding physician, but also give you an edge in your career path. Your choice of residency training programs is one of the most important decisions you will make in your professional life.

Our philosophy of training is to provide residents with the resources and support to grow, learn, and achieve. Some of these resources include:
  1. Diverse, challenging, and varied clinical environments. Our residents have clinical responsibilities at a “traditional” university-based teaching hospital and level one trauma center, a children’s hospital, and a private suburban hospital. We have a variety of rotations that emphasize the acquisition of specific skills, not just address service needs. Our residents even learn the practice of medicine in the air!

  2. Faculty dedicated to the education and advancement of Emergency Medicine. Our faculty are true “stars” in the field and are at the University of Cincinnati Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program to be involved with residents, period. Faculty act as resident advisors, have educational initiatives at their homes, and have a common goal to educate the top physicians in Emergency Medicine.

  3. Flexible elective time. The time for structured study of specific chapters is over! We want you to create a personal and professional niche within Emergency Medicine. Electives are where you gain the skills to succeed within a particular area in Emergency Medicine. That elective time can be anything! Perhaps you might be interested in research, ultrasound, wilderness medicine, public health, international medicine, administration, toxicology, emergency medical services, or aeromedical transport. Our residents have in-depth experiences that ultimately translate to enhanced employment opportunities.
Our goal for you is to get the optimal training for the post-residency "perfect job." Our residents go all over the country and have all types of careers. The University of Cincinnati emergency medicine training program has a long lasting reputation and graduates all over the country (and world) to facilitate getting that job. Embrace the challenge. Become part of both the legacy and future of Emergency Medicine.

All the best,
