Midlevel Providers Program
The University of Cincinnati Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (PA) Program started in 2000 as the first of its kind at the University Hospital and has served as a model for other departments within the College of Medicine. Our program has evolved to include Adult and Family Nurse Practitioners (NPs), resulting in a group of Midlevel Providers (MLPs) with varying levels of education and experience. The MLPs have improved overall Emergency Department operations at The University, Jewish and West Chester Hospitals by enhancing patient flow and management. We foster a true multi-disciplinary environment that supports excellent clinical care and education.
The medical director is Dr. William Knight IV, and he is assisted by two experienced chiefs--Chelsea Scully, PA-C and Ahren Staubitz, PA-C. The incorporation of MLPs allows for the rapid and efficient assessment and management of patients and enhanced teaching roles for the faculty. The teaching responsibilities do not end there. Our MLPs take an active role in the education and training of PA and NP students, new MLP hires, and the Emergency Medicine residents.
The case load each MLP carries relieves a significant burden for the faculty and residents, providing care for patients ranging from minor injuries to complex medical and traumatically injured patients. Each provider also serves as an educator for the residents and fellow MLPs, and acts as an integral component of the team approach to each patient, moving from initial assessment and management, to final disposition. The University of Cincinnati MLPs enjoy an excellent balance of individual autonomy with close physician supervision, while providing excellent primary clinical care of the patient.
Over the past year, we have increased our program to eleven full-time and two part-time providers. This program will continue to provide outstanding clinical care for our patients as well as function as integral members of the health care team.
