Emergency Medical Services Division

Director: Donald Locasto, MD

Continuing education, research and operations are important aspects of prehospital medicine. The Institute will provide support for all of these important functions. Training opportunities for the region’s first responders will include nationally known speakers and core curriculum requirements. Research will become an integral component of the Institute. Medical direction will also be a role of the physicians of the Institute.

Operations:
  • EMS Medical Directorship
  • Continual Field Support
  • Needlestick Program: The EMS Division hasd developed a streamline process which EMS, Fire, and Law Enforcement can go to one source for advice and treatment of a blood-borne exposure.
Education: Research: We are currently involved in the Polyheme Trial, but many other opportunities are available in this arena.

EMS Medical Direction:

The physicians in the Department of Emergency Medicine provide medical direction to 16 EMS/Fire services and four law enforcement teams in the region. Medical direction is provided by a team of physicians including one faculty member who functions as the Medical Director and two emergency medicine resident physicians who function as Assistant Medical Directors. This arrangement allows for a team approach to a significant task. The medical direction team provides continuing medical education, EMS chart review and specialty consultation to the EMS service. For the law enforcement teams, the physicians typically provide operational medical support.
